Digitized Hi8 video footage filmed in 1996, one year before Hong Kong’s handover from Britian to China.
In the summer of 1996, my heart grew heavy with anticipation of Britain’s handover of Hong Kong back to China.
While visiting my homeland, I recorded the ferry ride from Lantou Island back to the Hong Kong harbor,
knowing this would be the last time I would be seeing Hong Kong before it was returned to China.
In the video, ocean surfs, small islands and cityscapes along the route convey the mood of uncertainty,
dreams and hope I have for the future of my hometown.
The words, read aloud by women from Hong Kong, represent
voices from the past to present, as well as concerns for the future of Hong Kong.
